Gohar Mahal, also spelled Gauhar Mahal, was built in 1820 by Qudisiya Begum, who was the first female ruler of Bhopal. This heritage structure is located along the Upper Lake, and just behind another popular attraction of the city – Shaukat Mahal.

History of Gohar Mahal in Bhopal

After her husband was murdered in 1819, Qudisiya Begum – also called Gohar Begum – succeeded the throne of Bhopal, which at that time was a princely state. A year later, she commissioned the construction of the Gohar Mahal, which was used as a working place by her. Towards the latter part of her life, she started residing here. It was at the time, when the reign of Bhopal was with her daughter.

Architecture of Bhopal Gohar Mahal

The Gohar Mahal in Bhopal has an elegant amalgamation of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles. This three-storied structure is a magnificent example of the craftsmanship of the bygone era. Currently maintained by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, the palace is known for its stunning exteriors and interiors, featuring beautiful decorations and designs.

It features two courtyards as well as beautiful landscaped flower gardens and lawns. The first courtyard is called Diwan-e-Aam and the second one is called Diwan-i-Khas. However, both these courtyards have been closed for public viewing.

The distance between airport and Gohar Mahal in Bhopal is about 11 km, and it takes approximately 19 minutes to reach here. Private taxis and auto rickshaws are easily available near the airport.

By Rail: The nearest railway station to Gohar Mahal is the Bhopal Railway Junction, which lies at an approximate distance of 5.7 km. This major bus stand in Bhopal city receives buses from various important cities of Madhya Pradesh as well as that of neighboring states.

The nearest metro station to Gohar Mahal is the AIIMS Metro Station, which is about 14.2 km away. It takes around 30 minutes to cover this distance by hiring taxis and auto rickshaws.
