‘Pul Pukhta’ or Lower Lake Bridge connects Lower Lake to Upper Lake. Together, these lakes make up the Bhoj Wetland (a Ramsar site). The Lower Lake flows into river Patra, which further joins the Halali River - a small tributary of river Betwa.

A fact about the Lower Lake is that it has no source of freshwater; it receives outflow from the Upper Lake. Over time, the shortage of fresh water source and sewage drainage into it has led to an increase in its pollution level. The local government has been taking a number of steps to eradicate this issue and conserve the lake.
History of Lower Lake in Bhopal
The Lower Lake was built in 1794 to increase the beauty of this area of the Bhopal city. The construction of this artificial lake was commissioned by a minister of Nawab Hayat Muhammad Khan Bahadur (who ruled Bhopal from 1777 to 1807) called Chhote Khan. It was built by combining several wells.
With time, the shortage of fresh water and the issue of sewage drainage waste flowing into the lake and washer men cleaning clothes in it, has made it polluted. Steps have been initiated by the local authorities to restore it.
