Darul-Uloom Taj-ul Masajid is an Islamic seminary within Taj-ul-Masajid, one of India's largest mosques. Located in Old Bhopal, the mosque is known for its pinkish-red sandstone façade, three white domes, twin minarets and an enormous courtyard. It's among the city's most prominent architectural landmarks.

Taj-ul-Masajid, meaning “Crown Among Mosques,” is closely associated with the women rulers of Bhopal, particularly Nawab Shah Jahan Begum. Its Mughal-inspired architecture and history make it an interesting attraction for anyone exploring the city's heritage.

The complex remains an active place of worship and Islamic education. While tourists primarily visit the mosque for its architecture, the Darul Uloom seminary continues to operate within its historic buildings.

History of Darul-Uloom Taj-ul Masajid Bhopal

The construction of Taj-ul-Masajid began in the late 19th century under Nawab Shah Jahan Begum, who ruled Bhopal from 1868 to 1901. She envisioned a monumental mosque that would serve as both a place of worship and a centre for Islamic learning.

Construction was interrupted after her death in 1901, leaving the mosque unfinished for several decades. Work resumed in stages during the 20th century, with the major completion campaign beginning in 1971. The project was eventually completed in 1985.

The Darul Uloom seminary was founded by Maulana Muhammad Imran Khan Nadwi Azhari and other Islamic scholars on 1st June 1949. It initially operated from Masjid Shakur Khan before shifting to Taj-ul-Masajid in 1950.

The institution also played an important role in the mosque's later construction and development. Today, it continues to provide Islamic education, including Quranic memorisation, theology and religious studies, alongside general academic subjects.

Architecture of Taj-ul-Masajid Bhopal

Taj-ul-Masajid is a prominent example of Mughal-inspired Islamic architecture. Its design shares similarities with Delhi's Jama Masjid and Lahore's Badshahi Mosque.

The mosque has a long pinkish-red sandstone frontage with a monumental central arch. Three white domes rise above the prayer hall, flanked by two octagonal minarets with ornamental balconies.

The grand eastern gateway is another impressive part of the structure. It's inspired by the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri, with a wide staircase leading towards the entrance.

Inside, the mosque has a large open courtyard surrounded by arched galleries. A central water tank is used for wuzu (ritual washing before prayers). The scale of the courtyard becomes particularly apparent when viewed against the towering prayer hall.

The architectural details include carved stone pillars, floral patterns, decorative ceilings, lattice screens and Quranic calligraphy. Historic women's galleries are also incorporated into the building.

The prayer hall has intricate stonework and high ceilings, although tourist access to its interior isn't always permitted.

Things to Do at Darul-Uloom Taj-ul Masajid

1. Exploring the mosque courtyard

The vast courtyard is one of the main attractions of Taj-ul-Masajid. You can walk through the permitted areas and admire the surrounding arcades, domes and minarets.

The central ablution tank adds to the setting, sometimes reflecting the mosque's architecture in its water.

During quieter hours, the courtyard offers a peaceful contrast to the busy streets outside.

2. Appreciating the architectural details

Apart from the grand exterior, the mosque has several smaller details worth observing. Look for the carved arches, stone pillars, ornamental patterns and decorative doorways in accessible sections.

The architecture isn't uniform throughout the complex, reflecting the different stages of its construction.

The monumental staircase is worth viewing as well. However, the main gateway may be closed at times, with visitors directed towards a side entrance.

3. Learning about the Darul Uloom seminary

Darul Uloom is an important part of the Taj-ul-Masajid complex. It provides education in Islamic theology, Quranic studies and other subjects.

The institution has classrooms, accommodation for students and the Allama Syed Sulaiman Nadwi Library. According to the seminary, the library contains more than 25,000 books, primarily in Arabic, Urdu and Persian, with some English titles.

You may occasionally see students studying or reciting around the galleries. However, classrooms and residential areas aren't regular tourist spaces.

The library requires membership, and visitors interested in its collections should contact the institution in advance.

4. Observing the mosque's religious traditions

Taj-ul-Masajid is a functioning mosque where daily prayers and religious activities take place.

You may hear the call to prayer or Quranic recitation echoing through the arches. Worshippers also gather around the ablution tank before entering the prayer hall.

These activities are part of the mosque's everyday life. Visitors should observe respectfully without interrupting prayers or entering restricted areas.

5. Enjoying the views around Motia Talab

The nearby Motia Talab provides a different perspective of Taj-ul-Masajid.

From suitable viewpoints around the water, you can see the white domes and tall minarets above the old-city buildings. The pink sandstone looks particularly attractive in the soft light of late afternoon.

The mosque can also be seen illuminated after dark. But evening access to the complex may be restricted, so don't depend on entering the grounds for nighttime photography.
