Kerwa Lake Dam brings together open water, surrounding hills and an easy outing on Bhopal’s outskirts. You can watch birds, take photographs or spend an afternoon chatting over tea with a view of the reservoir. After the rains, the green surroundings make the drive part of the pleasure.

It’s a good choice for a relaxed visit with family and friends. Come for a short walk and a meal, or bring binoculars and spend longer around the woodland and water. Ziplining has been another attraction here, although you’ll need to check whether it’s running before planning an adventure outing.

Before you visit: Check which recreation areas and viewpoints are open. Part of the dam’s footbridge collapsed in November 2025; don’t plan to cross it without confirmation that public access is permitted.

Where is Kerwa Lake & Dam in Bhopal?

Kerwa Dam is around 15 km from Bhopal, near Mendora. Kerwa Lake is its reservoir, bordered by woodland and scrub. The dam also supplies water to Bhopal’s Kolar area.

The dam, picnic grounds, ecotourism area and MPT Kerwa Resort have separate access arrangements. Decide where you want to spend your time, as a stop at the resort won’t cover everything around Kerwa.

Things to do at Kerwa

1. Enjoying the lake views

The water and surrounding hills give you plenty to enjoy without rushing from one activity to another. Settle down at an open viewpoint, feel the breeze and leave time for photographs. Late-afternoon light brings colour to the reservoir, making it a pleasant time to linger if closing hours allow.

The view changes with the water level. During drier periods, you may see broad stretches of exposed shore. Even in the rainy season, a full lake or water flowing through the spillway isn’t guaranteed.

2. Spending time with family

A short walk, a snack and time in the gardens can make a simple family outing at Kerwa. Look for a spot around the lawns, shelters and seating in the recreation grounds.

Choose the developed grounds if you’d prefer easier walking. Some of the surrounding paths have rocks, steps and muddy stretches, so exploring farther takes more effort than a stroll around the gardens.

3. Watching birds

Kerwa’s water and woodland give you two different settings for birdwatching. Look for little egrets and white-breasted waterhens near the wetlands, and coppersmith barbets and plum-headed parakeets among the trees. You may also spot white-throated kingfishers in the wider area.

Bring binoculars and take time to listen to the bird calls. A quiet morning, within entry hours, suits a leisurely visit. If you’re new to birdwatching, look for an organised local bird walk to help you identify what you see. The birding grounds extend beyond the picnic area, but keep to permitted paths and avoid unfamiliar forest tracks.

4. Trying an adventure activity

Ziplining at Kerwa combines the excitement of the crossing with views over the reservoir landscape. The outing can also involve an uphill walk over uneven ground, preparation and a wait for your turn. Allow time for the whole experience, including somewhere for non-participating companions to wait.

Before booking, confirm that the zipline is operating and ask about the price, age and weight limits, approach to the launch point and weather cancellations. Archery and paintball are other activities you can try.

5. Stopping for a meal

MPT Kerwa Resort offers a restaurant and cottages near the reservoir. It’s an option for lunch with a view, or an overnight stay if you’d like more time here. Day visitors should check restaurant access and meal timings; some grounds may be reserved for staying guests.

Leave a little extra time for lunch on busy weekends. Menu choice and service can vary, so the setting is the main reason to choose this stop. For a shorter break, roadside tea and snack outlets offer simpler options such as chai and Maggi. Carry water and a snack if you’re heading away from the developed grounds.

Best time to visit Kerwa Lake

October to March is generally comfortable for spending time outdoors. Winter afternoons suit a picnic, while mornings are a good choice for birdwatching. A weekday gives you a better chance of a quiet visit; Sundays, holidays and popular rainy days can bring traffic, crowded parking and longer waits for meals.

Monsoon brings greener hills and a scenic drive, but slippery paths and rising water can limit access. Don’t make flowing water your only reason to visit. In summer, choose the cooler hours, as shade is uneven and water levels may be low.

Allow about 60–90 minutes for a short stop at a viewpoint or picnic area. Two to three hours gives you time for birds, photographs and a relaxed break. With lunch and an activity, set aside half a day, plus travel from Bhopal.

Things to keep in mind when visiting Kerwa

  • Respect barricades around the dam and bridge, and leave forest-side areas before closing time.
  • Stay out of the reservoir, downstream pools and spillway areas. Keep children close near the water.
  • Wear shoes with a good grip, especially after rain.
  • Carry drinking water, sun protection and a bag for litter. Cleanliness varies away from the maintained grounds.
  • Keep food packed away around monkeys, and don’t feed them.
  • Check toilet availability before a longer outing with children or older family members.
  • If you need wheelchair access, ask about steps, slopes and surfaces along the full route from drop-off to seating, viewpoints and toilets. Resort access alone doesn’t tell you whether the waterfront is accessible.
  • Keep noise low and give birds space.

Places to visit along with Kerwa

You can pair Kerwa with Upper Lake or Van Vihar for more time around Bhopal’s water and wildlife. For a change of pace, consider Bharat Bhavan or the Indira Gandhi National Museum of Man. Pick one additional attraction and check its hours so you can enjoy both without rushing.

How to reach Kerwa Lake & Dam in Bhopal?

The Kerwa resort area is approximately 17 km from Bhopal railway station and 25 km from Raja Bhoj Airport. The distance from your accommodation will depend on where you’re staying and which entrance you use.

A private vehicle or cab with a return pickup is a convenient way to visit. Give the driver the specific resort or recreation entrance you’ve checked is open, rather than a general Kerwa Dam map pin. Allow extra time on weekends and holidays.

Arrange your return before leaving Bhopal, as finding an app-based cab at Kerwa can be difficult. If you’re using public transport, check both the route and the connection from the last stop to your destination.
